We welcome you to the 34th Dinard Festival of British Film and invite you to witness the transformation of British life on screen! Films are inseparable from the culture(s) they emerge from. The decisions who makes them and the stories they tell exist in a societal context. The prevailing artistic, economic, and political climate are reflected in the funding policies of public institutions, broadcasters, streamers and private money. They all play a part in determining what audiences see – A role also played by the paying public.
Six films in competition, and new this year, four films by first time directors vying for the Prix Ouest-France Talents de Demain; all drawn from the thematic strands. The Past is a Foreign Country: Being There: Dinard ❤ Cinema: It’s a Family Affair and Irish Eyes in Dinard are shown alongside regular features: Shortcuts, Specials, Masterclasses and Dinard
Scolaire. Once again, we introduce a British Director to a French audience. Discovering Carol Morley presents four films, little known in France. A festival is more than a just a showcase of talent and creativity. Seen together these films take you on a journey from Britain’s colonial past to its multicultural present. From the margins of society to worlds of wealth and privilege. From Inspirational tales of triumph to the long shadow of the 20th century wars… and beyond.
If last year ‘s selection asked the question “Who do we think we are?” This year we can reply “We are many different things”. Long may it continue.
